About the Company

145 years of keeping Texas stocked.

The C.D. Hartnett Company has survived more than a century of changing times, inventions, economic crisis, and changing attitudes — on one foundation:“The customer is the reason — and the only reason — that The C.D. Hartnett Company is in business.”

Our history

From County Limerick to North Texas

  1. 1851

    An Irish beginning

Cornelius D. Hartnett is born in County Limerick, Ireland. His family emigrates to the United States in 1863.

  2. 1878

    $40 a month

Hartnett leaves railroad contracting for a grocery clerkship in Whitesborough, Texas — and is managing the store within a year.

  3. 1880

    Weatherford roots

The stock moves to Weatherford as Starr-Hartnett Company, wholesale and retail grocers, at 302 North Main Street — still the company headquarters today.

  4. 1904

    Incorporated in Texas

Now exclusively a wholesale distributor, the firm incorporates as The C.D. Hartnett Company of Weatherford, Texas.

  5. 1920s

    The oil boom years

The Ranger oil boom draws 50,000 people; Hartnett opens a warehouse and office in Ranger that operates until 1962.

  6. 1974

    Grocery Distribution Center

The company builds its 100,000 sq ft Grocery Distribution Center at 1002 E Columbia Street, Weatherford.

  7. 1984

    Foodservice Distribution Center

Ground breaks on the 112,000 sq ft Foodservice Distribution Center at 4151 Blue Mound Road, Fort Worth.

  8. 2004

    Joining McLane

After 100 years as a privately held corporation, the company joins McLane Company, Inc. — a Berkshire Hathaway company headquartered in Temple, Texas.

  9. Today

    Still what we do

One of the oldest businesses in Weatherford, C.D. Hartnett keeps Texas stocked with the same founding conviction: the customer is the only reason we're in business.
